The Lumberg Automation Line of Industrial Connectivity The Lumberg Automation line of connectivity products represents over 25 years of engineering excellence. When used in conjunction with our cabling and active device products you can rely on outstanding signal transmission quality and reliability. An overview of the Lumberg line follows, segmented into three primary product categories: Industrial Ethernet Connectivity, Fieldbus Connectivity and General Connectivity.
Industrial Ethernet Connectivity Originally, the Ethernet specification provided for the use of coaxial cables as the transfer medium. A distinction was made between thick coax (10BASE-5) and thin coax (10BASE-2), depending on the cable structure. Because of its low cost, thin coax was commonly referred to as “Cheaper net”. Today, the use of twisted-pair cable (10BASE-T, 100 BASE-TX) is more common. This type of cable represents a divergence from the original mechanisms in a number of ways. In twisted-pair cables, sending and receiving channels are separated. The channels are then transferred over a wire pair. The lines are organized according to categories. Within the industry, use of Fast Ethernet with a data transfer rate of 100 Mbit/s is widespread. The required cable must meet Category-5 standards. To improve network expansion capability and increase data transfer rates, fiber-optic cables are also used as transfer medium (10BASE-F, 100BASE-FX, and 1000BASE-X). Lumberg Automation offers a complete suite of industrial hardened Ethenet products suitable for Ethernet/IP, Profinet, or Modbus TCP and include:

– Can be directly mounted on the machine
Fieldbus Connectivity (DeviceNet, Profibus-DP, CANopen, Interbus) Early interconnection schemes employed point-to-point wiring where individual wires connected input and output devices to host controllers. On large automation jobs, this could account for tens and even hundreds of thousands of points of termination. To cut down on wiring cost and installation time, multi-conductor cables became popular. The next innovation was the advent of the bus system. Rather than communication between device and host controller using a bulky home run cable, bus systems collect signals from multiple devices and transmit them on a single cable. Many digital networks are in use today for industrial automation applications. These networks range from low-level systems that gather data from simple discrete devices to sophisticated networks in which intelligent devices implement distributed control. Lumberg Automation offers a complete suite of products and include:
- Centralized I/O Blocks
– e2c 67™: an IP67 rated on-machine solution. It is a rugged and fully modular
field bus station with expandable I/O that can be used anywhere on the plant floor.
It supports up to 128 I/O points and supports DeviceNet, Profibus-DP and Interbus
protocols
– e2c 20™: an IP20 rated in-cabinet I/O solution. It is a compact, modular field bus
station with expandable I/O that is designed to meet the needs of applications where
relatively short distances exist between the switch cabinet and I/O devices
concentrated in key locations. It supports DeviceNet and Profibus-DP protocols
- Decentralized I/O Blocks/Modules
– LioN-M™ I/O Modules: Can handle up to 16 inputs/16 outputs where channels can be used universally as inputs or outputs. Blocks are available in DeviceNet and Profibus-DP
– LioN-S™ I/O Modules: Can handle up to 8 inputs/8 outputs where channels can be used universally as inputs or outputs. Blocks are available in DeviceNet and Profibus-DP
– LioN-Link™ IP67 Distribution System: an IP67 rated On-Machine I/O solution. Consists of bus coupler modules which provide the connection between the entire fieldbus system and the fieldbus independent I/O modules.
The ideal solution for reducing overall design and install costs. The connectivity suite of products from Lumberg Automation includes: Distribution Boxes which are used to distribute power and signal for devices such as sensors, actuators, or dual-acting solenoids; Splitters provide a means of bringing two different sensor/actuator signals into a single port of a distribution box, thereby doubling the capacity of the box; Panel-Mount Receptacles mount in a fixed location (sensor or panel enclosre) and mate with a molded or field-attachable connector; Field-attachable Connectors are used to complete the assembly of a single-ended cordset and come in a variety of thread sizes and number of poles/pins, straight and right-angle, and include IDC, screw termination, or solder leads; DIN Valve Connectors are commonly used with solenoids that control valves in hydraulic and pneumatic applications, including pressure switches, optical switches and limit switches. The connectivity suite of products in categorized by product type (size of connector) as follows:
- Includes thread sizes 7/8”, 1” and 1 1/8”
- Because of their AWG rating, they are often used in power applications that have high current requirements or in sensor, light curtain and communications applications
- Includes thread size 12mm (M12), the most popular size
- Widely used with proximity and photoelectric sensors
- Includes thread size 12mm (M12) with a dual keyway
- Used for applications requiring alternating current (AC)
- Also used with proximity and photoelectric sensors
- Includes thread size 8mm (M8)
- Based upon a European standard that has migrated to the U.S., this connector is exclusively used with proximity and photoelectric sensors in applications that require light weights and small size
- DIN Valve Connectors are commonly used with solenoids that control valves in hydraulic and pneumatic applications
- Other applications include use with pressure switches, optical switches and limit switches
