If you're looking for reliability for your fieldbus network in harsh environments such as the oil sands of Canada and other oil, gas and petrochemical operations, Belden has released the perfect cables for you. Belden has expanded its line of FOUNDATION Fieldbus cables with Type A C(UL) and UL tray-rated cable. The cables comply with both Canadian and US regulatory requirements and meet the Fieldbus IEC 61158-2 (ISA/SP-50) specification.

Standard single and multi-pair cables are available with an easily identifiable orange jacket, or a blue jacket for Intrinsically Safe (IS) applications. They are UL approved for direct burial, are oil and sunlight resistant, RoHS compliant and CE approved. XLP insulation provides additional physical enhancements of the conductors including better cut through and chemical resistance.

Belden recently added new Gigabit Ethernet connectors to its Lumberg product range. What makes the new connectors so special? Special shielding on all of these Ethernet connectors ensures reliable data transmission even where strong electromagnetic fields exist. The connectors' compact design with the special shielding covers the individual wire pairs to ensure dependable transmission.

The new Gigabit Ethernet connectors support data rates up to 10Gbps. So, these connectors can turn your network into a veritable data freeway because they all ensure maximum bandwidth. Since they are also extremely robust, they can be used even under the most rugged environmental conditions. The connectors, which are available in both M12 and RJ45 connection technology, allow maximum data rates – and that applies equally to the field-attachable and flange version, or the plug and connection cables. In addition, the Gigabit Ethernet connectors are able to withstand even the most rugged environmental conditions, as well as extreme heat and cold, thus offering highly available and cost-effective solutions.

For harsh environmental conditions such as those found in a power utility substation, only a hardened computer purpose-built for the environment will do. The Magnum 10C is designed to enable mission-critical applications to withstand extreme temperatures, power surges and fast transients, as well as other issues present in harsh environments. Options include a sealed chassis and convection cooling using a patented thermal design.

The Magnum 10C is part of the GarrettCom brand’s 10-Series family of next generation substation offerings specifically designed for power utility applications and other extreme environments. The new substation computer meets or exceeds the IEC 61850 and IEEE 1613 global standard to support substation communications needs with error-free operation.

Southern Power District (SPD) is a publicly-owned electric distribution system providing electricity and related services to customers in south central Nebraska. Southern operates over 6,900 miles of distribution lines that are served by 73 substations located throughout the District’s 4,028 square mile service area.

SPD was looking to improve improve the management of electrical load data through the implementation of substation Nexus meters as well as advanced substation networking equipment. SPD wanted to replace a radio based system that had been experiencing significant interruptions during high load periods. These interruptions frustrated the decision-making process for electrical load management, as well as delayed system status information.

The automotive industry is a vital piece of the economy. A recent article in Automation World tells the story of one Tier-One automotive manufacturer, American Axle & Manufacturing, Inc. (AAM) as they set out to reduce downtime, improve productivity and lower costs.

This story has a happy ending for all involved. Focusing on finding a vendor that could provide quick deployment, global reach and hardened networking products, AAM found their EtherNet/IP provider in Belden. As the Jeff Smith, technical engineering lead at AAM, points out in the article, that the ability to replace multiple fieldbuses with a single solution was key to their decision.
