Given the complexity and smarts of industrial machinery, customers scramble to get a down machine up and running as quickly as possible. Initially, their focus is on troubleshooting the machine. Much of this trouble shooting can be time consuming given the complexity of the overall machine design and network installed. So, whom do customers turn to? Initially they will turn to the manufacturer that built the machine to assist them in getting it up and running.

So what happens to all the lost products and productivity? The customer will want to know what caused the failure and the steps taken to isolate and fix the problem. Let us say that the manufacturer of the machine isolated the problem as a faulty sensor. After further investigation, they found that the sensor was not faulty, but the connection or cable joining the sensor to the application shorted.

The International Security Conference (ISC) took place March 28 through 30 at the Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas. Over 900 companies exhibited at the show. Belden’s GarrettCom brand exhibited and represented Belden’s Industrial Solutions Division in the booth.

PoE (Power over Ethernet) was a key area of booth focus in terms of products displayed as well as the booth’s main theme. PoE has come a long way since GarrettCom started exhibiting about five years ago at ISC. On display in the GarrettCom booth was a full breadth of PoE switches as well as hardened switches and routers. A large display board of Belden industrial cables was also prominent and generated quite a bit of interest. When GarrettCom first started exhibiting at the ISC West Show, the booth personnel had to explain the basic concepts of what PoE was and how a PoE switch worked. This year, PoE was everywhere. Solutions for standard 802.3af PoE, 802.3at PoE+, and beyond were shown and discussed.

Is your machine operating at optimal performance? Were the components used certified to a specific IP rating? If you do not know, you may want to ask your machine builder about the process they use in specifying the components for your machine. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Standards is the international standards and conformity assessment body for all fields of electro technology.

These standards help engineers to determine the level of protection required based on the environment in which the machine will operate. With this said the IEC guidelines for ingress protection ratings are used by engineers to insure that machines will meet the environmental requirements specified by the customer over a specified period. Using these guidelines may not be a necessity, but if followed and applied appropriately, they can provide, with some degree of certainty that the machine being designed is not under- or over-engineered.
