Are you feeling the pressure of increasing production demands from your manufacturing facility? You’re definitely not alone.

We hear this as a top concern when we talk to industrial manufacturers worldwide. And since these demands will only continue to increase, industrial automation efforts become even more important for finding new efficiencies while increasing quality.

One way we’re seeing companies address these demands is through driverless transport systems, called automated guided vehicles (AGVs), specifically wireless AGVs.

Read more to find out about wireless AGVs and how they are impacting the future of industrial automation.

Southern Power District (SPD) is a publicly-owned electric distribution system providing electricity and related services to customers in south central Nebraska. Southern operates over 6,900 miles of distribution lines that are served by 73 substations located throughout the District’s 4,028 square mile service area.

SPD was looking to improve improve the management of electrical load data through the implementation of substation Nexus meters as well as advanced substation networking equipment. SPD wanted to replace a radio based system that had been experiencing significant interruptions during high load periods. These interruptions frustrated the decision-making process for electrical load management, as well as delayed system status information.

If you’d like to learn more about industrial wireless, two great resources are now available. The first is the June issue of Control Engineering, which features a cover story on Industrial Wireless. The cover photo and lead story feature Hirschmann industrial wireless products implemented at the PEMEX Tula Refinery in Mexico.

In this application, the refinery was able to increase efficiency and protect its critical cooling tower s with wireless monitoring and analysis of process and vibration sensor data. Belden and RYMSA, the system integrator, were able to implement the wireless products to protect critical assets and overcome serious line-of-sight issues.

To read more, visit the Control Engineering cover story online--beginning on page 30.

Still haven’t gotten enough industrial wireless?

Last month, Belden sponsored and presented in the successful webinar, “Industrial Wireless: Where and When.”

You can still register to catch the webinar that had over 500 viewers.

The UTC Expo kicked off today in Orlando, FL. GarrettCom, Belden, and Hirschmann products were on display at our booth #529.

There was strong interest in serial to Ethernet connectivity products. A number of booth visitors mentioned that while they have seen and experienced the migration to Ethernet in the substation, there is still an enormous need to connect to the legacy serial infrastructure. To that end, GarrettCom's Magnum DX line—in particular, the smaller DX40 Serial Device Router as well as the DX940 Configurable Cellular Router generated significant interest. For the larger products, the new Magnum "10-series" with its mix of serial and Ethernet in the 10ETS Ethernet Terminal Server and 10XTS Router Terminal Server was well received.
