SCADA Security: Justifying the Investment
Blog Category: Industrial Security

Posted by: Frank Williams on March 07, 2012

In my blog article Industrial Data Compromise – The New Business Risk I
recommended that End Users and Control Engineers need to redouble their efforts in relation to securing their process. However, finding the best way to justify the costs of implementing and maintaining a more secure process environment is new territory even for the most seasoned control system engineer. In this article I suggest a way to determine the right amount of investment in ICS and SCADA security measures.

The Challenges Facing Control Engineers Today

Industrial control engineers are finding added complexity invading their world at an accelerated pace. Global competition continues to drive expectations of increased productivity. New technologies with shorter device life cycles demand compressed “pilot” project testing time. And the networking of everything forces tight integration between the enterprise network and the previously isolated, fit-for-purpose, process control network (PCN).

Belden Design Seminar - Making Network Security Easy
Blog Category: Industrial Security

Posted by: Frank Williams on August 20, 2013

Due to a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality, our industry has historically resisted, rather than embraced, emerging technology. Thankfully – and not a moment too soon – experts have started to take advantage of the technologies at their disposal in one key area: security.

As a whole, however, security can be overwhelming. While many managers and engineers know they need to implement some sort of network security measures to protect their operations, they often times don’t know where to begin. And with that uncertainty (or lack of budget), they may not spring into action unless forced.

Belden Design Seminar: Learn Practical Industrial Cyber Security Skills
Blog Category: Industrial Security

Posted by: Frank Williams on August 27, 2014

Industrial network security is a top of mind concern for managers in industrial automation organizations. However, there isn’t a simple formula for applying it and many engineers either don’t know where to start or don’t know how to develop practical skills in this area.

For those of you looking for a straight forward solution, consider attending our upcoming Industrial Ethernet Infrastructure (IEI) Design Seminar, being held Sept. 21-24 in Houston, Texas. Many of Belden’s top security experts will be there presenting a special “track” of sessions related to network security. Our goal is to help event attendees learn where to start with their security strategy, in a practical way that’s not overwhelming or complicated.
