4 Ways to Know if Your Cable is Right for VFD Applications
Blog Category: Industrial Ethernet

Posted by: Peter Cox on September 28, 2016

Variable frequency drives (VFDs) are essential to the industrial world. From fans and pumps to conveyors and mixers, VFDs deliver energy savings and more precise process control, while also reducing the wear and tear on other industrial equipment.

VFD applications, however, present unique challenges due to their management of electrical current and other factors.
Thus, it’s essential to make sure your system uses high-quality cabling and proper installation procedures.

It’s important to keep in mind there is no industry standard for VFD cables – so, any manufacturer can claim to make cables for AC motors and drive applications. A “real” VFD cable, however, is designed to keep current within the cable and not disturb nearby equipment, networks or instrumentation. If you build your VFD system with lower-quality, or non-VFD cable, you can put both personnel and operations at risk.

So what should you look for in a cable to know if it’s a real VFD cable? Read on to find out what to consider when evaluating industrial cabling for your VFD application.
