The Smart Factory of the Future – Part 1
Blog Category: Industrial Ethernet

Posted by: on January 28, 2015

When it comes to industrial networking today, many factories and process control facilities around the world are focused on upgrading to managed Ethernet networks. With the long, useful life of industrial devices, there is plenty of old equipment using legacy industrial protocols in active service.

Even given this reality, it is instructive to step away from current challenges and look ahead to the Factory of the Future. What will industrial production look like 5-20 years from now? What do I need to understand about where factories are going to guide my decisions today?

This article is the first in a series of articles on the Smart Factory that aim to advise you about where factory production and automation are going. It applies not only to discrete manufacturing, but also to automation in the process, energy and transportation industries.

Let’s take a look at what the Smart Factory is and what characterizes its communication systems.

The Smart Factory of the Future – Part 2
Blog Category: Industrial Ethernet

Posted by: on March 11, 2015

Earlier this year I published our first article on the Smart Factory of the Future. It described a vision of manufacturing where systems are more intelligent, flexible and dynamic.

In the future machinery and equipment will have the ability to improve processes through self-optimization and autonomous decision-making. This is in contrast to running fixed program operations, as is the case today.

“Cyber-physical” systems will also be important, with feedback loops where physical processes affect operational programs and vice versa.

Let’s now consider the manufacturing LAN and its communication systems. How does it need to change to realize the vision of the Smart Factory?

Designing and Securing an Industrial Wireless Network
Blog Category: Industrial Ethernet

Posted by: Industrial IT Team on July 01, 2015

As the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) rapidly drives up the number of connected devices in facilities, everything – from the plant floor, to oil rigs, to substations – is transforming. This transformation includes an increase in the use of industrial wireless for a number of applications.

For example, wireless connections are being used more and more for things like data collection, access to remote equipment and connecting portable equipment to the plant network.

Perhaps you’ve tried wireless in the past and it just didn’t work out how you hoped in terms of reliability or security.

Well, if that were the case, I urge you now to reconsider. Wireless technology and standards have vastly improved and today it is possible to deploy robust, reliable, secure industrial wireless solutions.

5 Ways to Start Using Industrial Wireless for the IIoT
Blog Category: Industrial Ethernet

Posted by: Industrial IT Team on July 29, 2015

In the factory setting, the trend of connecting more and more devices to the network is called the Industrial Internet of Things, or the IIoT.

We’ve always had networks in factories, but the IIoT takes it a step further. When smart devices communicate with each other it can lead to enhanced functionality, improved operational efficiency and added value – all without any human interaction.

Many companies want to take advantage of the IIoT, but face a dilemma when it comes to wireless connections. They want the payback, data and efficiencies that wireless can deliver. However, they are skeptical because of a past bad experience or an outdated frame of reference.

The fact is industrial wireless technology has made great strides in terms of performance, reliability and security. The potential benefits, especially when it comes to network efficiency and agility, are huge.

Industrial Wireless – Selecting the Right Antenna for Your Application
Blog Category: Industrial Ethernet

Posted by: on August 26, 2015

As a network designer or engineer, you might avoid wireless solutions because you are worried that transmission interference will make network communications unreliable. Although you may have heard of recent technical improvements in industrial wireless technology, you may still be concerned about using it for mission-critical processes.

Other articles in this blog have described some of the advances in technology and standards that have made industrial wireless applications very reliable. This article takes a close look at one key component —the antenna.

Selecting the right antenna technology is essential for dependable WLAN connections. Let’s examine how to go about it.
