Purpose
The effects of corrosion on shielding during the installed life of the cable is an important consideration, especially in flooded cables. Both outdoor aerial and burial cables are subject to a wide variety of changes in the elements which can degrade the corrosion resistance on the shields of the cable. To provide information concerning the shield effectiveness of CoreGuardŽ cables after exposure to a corrosive environment, the following tests were performed.
Samples Evaluated
9117 (Standard Messengered Cable) and 1258A (CoreGuard Messengered Cable).
Test Procedures
Samples were tested for shielding effectiveness, as measured by the absorbing clamp test. Test data displays the shielding effectiveness of each type of cable before and after exposure to corrosion. Testing provided a comparison of the effects of corrosion on shielding activeness.
The corrosion of the samples was accomplished by forcing a corrosive solution through each cable continuously for seven days. A corrosive alkali solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was used, with an adjusted pH of 11. The samples were dried for three weeks and then measured.
Test Results
The test data conclusively demonstrates CoreGuard shielding performance is superior to standard drop cables. The results of the test indicate that Belden 1258A CoreGuard Cable performed approximately 30 dB better than the Belden 9117 non - CoreGuard Cable. Graphs 1 and 2 illustrate the effect of corrosion on shielding for the 9117 non - CoreGuard and the1258A CoreGuard Cables.
